Marriott International announced during 2018 that it will remove disposable plastic straws and plastic stirrers from all of its 6,500 properties by July 2019. This could eliminate the use of more than 1 billion plastic straws per year. This is great for the environment due to the fact that plastic straws will never fully decompose after being tossed. “We are proud to be among the first large U.S. companies to announce that we’re eliminating plastic straws in our properties worldwide,” said Arne Sorenson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marriott International. “Removing plastic straws is one of the simplest ways our guests can contribute to plastic reduction when staying with us – something they are increasingly concerned about and are already doing in their own homes. We are committed to operating responsibly and – with over one million guests staying with us every night – we think this is a powerful step forward to reducing our reliance on plastics.”

This is just the latest change in Marriott’s company while trying to enhance sustainability and reduce plastic consumption. Last year, they had replaced their small plastic toiletry bottles with in-shower dispensers. This change eliminated a massive amount of waste from the hotels.

There are a lot of other hotels that are going more green by getting rid of plastic straws for the environment. St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel London, Los Sueños Marriott Ocean & Golf Resort, and JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort are just a few examples.

This initiative is a great small step toward eliminating plastic from a lot of our daily lives. Plastic does not decompose so in order to help the environment we need to try and use less. It will be interesting to see what other hotel brands follow in Marriott’s footsteps.
